Anders Birger.

ANDERS BIRGER.

This dam weather.

Anders Birger documents political issues of the Syrian Civil War, which demonstrates the ongoing conflict.
From his work I feel that I have learnt the magnitude of fear that people experience due to their own government. Birger also records quotes issued from twitter conversations and facebook by the Syrian nationals that accompanies his photography, which I feel increases the impact this has on the viewer as it allows you to be exposed tot he reality of the Syrian Uprising.
This message is communicated through imagery and text which support each other, which I feel, when I first saw this piece, has a great impact due to its reality and gives the viewer an insight to the intensity of fear that the people are experiencing.

Henry Dixon.

HENRY DIXON.

Henry Dixon documents buildings threatened by demolition where he uses historical issues to communicate his message removing the old for the new.
Dixon recorded the Holborn Valley Improvements which was one of the largest buildings projects in London.
From looking at Dixon's photography I have learnt about the history of demolition in Mid-Victorian London and about the heritage on the verge of destruction as London was re-invented. Therefore, I feel that his photography allows for political affairs to teach us the progress of government state and ideas they had for London within that period.
I feel that the use of his prints allows for the colour to also support his message as it braces the typical perception of London smog, busy streets and the impurity.

Gemma Marmalade.

GEMMA MARMALADE.

Strange Birds.

Gemma Marmalade's installation work is based on an experiment that took place in 1957, where parapsychologists discovered that pigeons where able to indicate the sexuality of humans just by looking at them, in response Marmalade's work demonstrates this experiment.
Her work has incorporated historical, humour and a nature aspect, reviewing the history of science and the nature of bird's behaviour, which may be humorous to some as just through a initial judgement from a bird it is able to determine whether a person is gay or not.
From Marmalade's work I have learnt that immediate judgements can be made on a initial sighting, which challenges the perception of sexuality. I feel that her work bases inspirations around identifying sexuality and homophobic issues. These issues are communicated through using images of, for example, a diagram of a the humans visual field, in the slide show to incorporate the idea of perception. The main image in the slide show is a woman sat on a chair facing a pigeon which is on a table, the image supports the instructions made within the video. The use of black and white acknowledges the subjects to be the main focus, allowing the message within this piece to stand out, and demonstrate the pigeon identifying the woman's sexuality.
